"GLORIALLE": Künstlerisch-wissenschaftliche Forschungsarbeit zur Kreierung eines tragfähigen Kunstprojekts am Sektor Operatic Pop

This artistic-scientific Master’s project deals with the outstanding representatives of the operatic pop genre Luciano Pavarotti and “Il Divo”. The qualitative analysis of the career developments of these personalities shows that they maintain an operatic, purely classical image oriented around the concept of the traditional educated bourgeoisie. Their operatic means of expression became their trademark on the pop stage and succeeded in bringing together a wide-ranging audience. Spectral analysis and auditory assessment of the vocal presentations of these performers shows that their phrasing on the pop stage represents a reversal of the classical principle. Their operatic performances, the good carrying capacity and the homogeneous sound of their voices give these performers a high recognition value. At the same time, a semi-structured expert interview with business and brand coach Mag.a Daniela Ettl shows that the creation of an artistic persona is enabled through the creation of an image corresponding to the artist’s name. In the course of this research project, a concept for the creation of an artistic persona was developed within the framework of an artistic research project, whereby both the external appearance and an initial repertoire consisting of eight songs specifically composed and arranged for the project were developed by me. Through phenomenological reflection, my direct experiences, perceptions and aesthetic experiences within the entire development process of my artistic project, incorporating my entire bodily experience as a central component, are described and analysed. The results of this Master’s project clearly demonstrate that it is possible for opera singers to achieve success on the operatic pop stage with the help of an appropriate strategy and the creation of an individual artistic working concept under the condition of preserving their own artistic identity. Thus, this research project also makes a fundamental contribution to the topic of operatic pop, which has been insufficiently explored by the scientific literature so far.
